Windsor public cheers Queen - BBC News

As a British person, I am immensely proud to wish our Queen a happy birthday tomorrow. She has represented our country (and its colonies) since 1952 with honour and genosity, and embodies British patriotism to a tee. A truly extraordinary, brilliant woman whom we all wish to be alive and well for many years to come.

Yaaaaay! Long live the queen! I'm a foreigner but I quite like the monarchy. It's so grand!
I hope this thread won't turn into "why the monarchy sucks"

We get three days off when she dies; let's just remember that.

Am I allowed to make snarky anti-Monarchist/pro-Republican comments on here? Or does that cut too close to abortion territory?

Woo! Happy birthday, your majesty. I think the monarchy is a cool thing to have. Not everything is about practicality - some things have to be there just for fun and the british monarchy has become a pretty unique feature worldwide now, so I think it would be a shame to get rid of it. It makes the country more interesting.

Happy Birthday, but don't forget about all the other people born on that day. Seriously, I feel bad for anyone else if their special day is disrupted just because of someone famous.

What will happen to me if I refuse to celebrate or go to a street party?

Knew there would be some republicans here to spoil it for us (joking, joking!)
Anyway, the celebrations officially happen in June when it's her official birthday. Yep, she gets two birthdays!

Well, congrats to her. She's the longest reigning monarch in world history, isn't she?

Personally I don't support monarchy, but I like her as a person; she seems nice.

Just a question because I wasn't alive when the last royal died. If someone in our family dies around the same time, are we forced to stop our own family mourning and mourn them?

If you think I'm being crazy a couple who got married in 29th [i think] of April 2011 were forced to give up some of their party for any of their friends/family who wanted to watch the royal wedding. But weddings are a more happier time than deaths and in deaths people tend to just want to be alone, so, just wondering.

Not trying to bring the celebration of the thread down, but I didn't know of where to ask this because it's never come up.

Sounds bad but that's basically my thinking. The day off for the royal wedding was great.

I don't really care about the monarch. I guess it brings tourism to London so that's a good thing but we don't need one. She holds kind of a pointless position in today's society and is more of a figure head than anything else. Good on her turning 90 though.

She's the Queen of Canada too, so I have literally watched her age over the years on our dollars, LOL!

My French-Canadian grandmother was a big fan of the Queen (which is incredibly ironic, to say the least), but she did marry a Brit (also unheard of in those days), so not surprising.

On my grandmother's 50th wedding anniversary, the Queen sent Granny and Grampa a letter of congratulations (it was requested, of course, the Queen did not follow their wedding from the start, I am certain). It's a nice memento in our family history...

I have no opinions on the Monarchy since it is such a benign presence in our lives. In other words, I, like most of my compatriots, am totally indifferent to it, even though the Queen is officially our Head of State...though it would be nice if she came over to my place for tea...

Well, I remember reading about a couple who invited her to their wedding as a joke and were then shocked when she showed up. You can try that.

Isn't she also queen of New Zealand? I know they love her over there.

The King of Thailand is the longest reigning monarch (since 1946).

Shame we cant get a bank holiday for it. If its true that we get three days off when she dies, please let it be on a Monday.

I don't mind the Queen. She is silent and out of sight except for once a year at Christmas when she's wheeled out, yet manages to bring in a shed load of tourists.

"Wills" and ruddy Kate though, cannot stand that pair. Nearly as bad as the Kardashians. Literally everywhere you look, with cutesy "totally natural and not meticulously posed" photos of their apparently "magical" and "totally not ordinary" offspring dressed like they're from the olden days (What 2 year old wears button up shirts and cardigans for goodness sake! Who does that to a child?).

And Kate is incredibly boring, never opens her mouth, seeimgly just there to have babies and look pretty in whatever extortionately priced designer dress she's been slipped into by the media team. (I'm cynical I know!)

I dread the day when we have to have them as King and Queen.
