LGBT News Mississippi’s New Anti-LGBT Bill Claims That Women Can Be Fired For Wearing Pants

I think this would be an insult to the 19th Century. During that period, we had Darwin, Faraday and a host of other pioneering scientists and thinkers, not to mention the beginnings of the industrial revolution. I would say they are more like the 18th century...

 

Obviously the bill is homophobic and all, but is it not factual that women can be fired for not wearing pants in the US?

In the UK men can be fired for wearing beards or having long hair, the latter even in jobs where long hair is accepted for women (so where there are no logical health and safety concerns in place). Also, women can be fired for not wearing makeup in certain roles (casinos for example, where it can br treated as uniform).

 

Wow. Mississippi girl right here. Yes, it's different here. I was raised in Texas, but have lived other places as well. We'll see what happens....I'm not so sure about it not passing. I can't believe it got this far. I mean, it IS 2016.

I live in Mississippi, and this bill makes me nauseous. How am I as a transgender man going to go to college here when I'll be in a girl dorm, worried about people telling me where I can pee and always calling me by my birth name. :bang:

At this point I'm hoping someone going to Canada or Sweden will let me hitch a ride, even if it's in the trunk. I'm so done.

Mississippi House Bill 1523
The so-called Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act

This bill allows discrimination by individuals, religiously-affiliated organizations (including hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, and more), and businesses based on religious beliefs or moral convictions regarding marriage for same-sex couples; sexual activity outside of heterosexual
marriage; and transgender people.

This means that single moms, same-sex couples and their families, transgender people, and vulnerable kids can face discrimination including being turned away from a homeless shelter, denied important medical care, or lose their jobs.

What will this bill do?

- Kids can be forced into conversion therapy by their foster parents and the state could not do anything to protect the kids. What¡¦s more, counselors practicing conversion therapy, including school counselors, would be allowed to keep their licenses.

- Single mothers can even be turned away by a homeless shelter, food pantry, or day-care program.

- Government employees can refuse to issue marriage licenses or solemnize marriages for same sex couples.

- Transgender people can be denied necessary medical care, and LGBT people or single women can be refused counseling or fertility services.

- Businesses offering goods and services relating to weddings, baby showers, or anniversaries would be authorized to discriminate against customers.

- Social service agencies like homeless shelters, emergency services, foster care agencies and more could discriminate against LGBT people, including kids and families, even when they receive government grants or contracts to provide care to everyone.

- It lets schools refuse to allow transgender students to dress consistent with their gender identity, or to use the appropriate restroom or other facilities, in conflict with federal law. And it empowers any person to challenge someone else's use of restrooms and demand proof of others' "anatomy and genetics at time of birth."

HB 1523 will be costly and jeopardizes all kinds of federal funding, including:

- Educational funding for all types of schools, whether it is elementary, secondary, or a college or university.

- Federal funding for adoption and foster care services.

LGBT people, children, single mothers and fathers who suffer harm because they were denied necessary health care, fired from their jobs or otherwise treated unfairly would be stripped of any redress-this bill would give a defense in any kind of lawsuit, regardless of whether the government is involved.

This isn't about protecting anyone from "government discrimination," it's about sanctioning discrimination against members of our state in our society.

Mississippi, you were my home for a decade. I grew up in your pine tree-filled forests, learned to walk on the dirt roads and grassy hills, went to school with a wonderful cross-section of people, ate more grits, fried okra, and crawdads than humanly possible, showed sheep and horses in 4-H, and despite my lack of a Southern drawl, you are the home of my childhood.

Today, perhaps more than any day before, I am ashamed to be from Mississippi. Using the mantle of "religious freedom" to enshrine a new era of Jim Crow that make LGBT citizens less in the eyes of the law is shameful.

I am not a second-class citizen. I spent 20 years serving as a United States Marine to help protect our system of representative democracy. I refuse to let your hate define me. So, never one to mince words, fuck you Mississippi. Fuck you with something hard and sand-papery.

 

I take back what I said. North Carolina's fine. Just keep me out of Mississippi.

If this passes, we have officially stepped backwards a couple centuries.

 

RavenTheRat, it passed and was signed by the governor. It's the law. Ugh. Un-effing-believable, but there it is. I see the ACLU and/or other groups filing lawsuits post-haste.

It passed. The Governor just signed it into law. You really can't underestimate the extremism in some of these southern states. Not nearly everyone, of course, but a big enough majority to make decent, kindhearted folks suffer. It's odd, because I've met so many close friends online from the south, and it seems like a very friendly place...though with some crazy stuff happening. I do wanna see it someday. Maryland doesn't really feel 'southern'; there's certainly elements blended in, but it's Baltimore is pretty much a northern town that moves slower than the ones further north.

But back to the topic...this is sad, and idiotic. Don't they have bigger problems to solve, such as having some of the highest rates of poverty, infant mortality, obesity, illiteracy and other such woes, out of all the states in the nation? One would think these things would come first.

 

I never imagined a bill like that could pass in the U.S. I am so disillusioned right now.
