So lately, I have found myself being interested in watching gore and disturbing themed movies. Some made me say "meh" and some made me "WTF?!!!". For you, what is the most disturbing film you have ever watched? And what makes it disturbing?

Also, is it ok to talk about and mention banned films here in EC?

I would assume it's okay, provided we don't put something ridiculously graphic or directly link to something "inappropriate". You know, no porn basically.

That said, I'll have to think about this, because there's a few that come to mind...

Cannibal Holocaust was pretty horrifying in the end and left my knees shaking.

Yeah…having to watch that was one of the worst things I've ever done in a game of Truth or Dare.

    Certainly the least fun.

I haven't seen it personally but I have a friend (woah... Me, a friend?) who's seen it and has been scarred for life by it.

I guess the most disturbing film I've ever watched would have to be... Well even though I'm a pretty disturbed person, I've not really seen that many disturbing films, so I guess something like riddick, and that isn't a disturbing film in the slightest.

    Don't see it. Ever.

    Unless you want to.

Then see it, but have a trash can on handy to barf into.

Not as disturbing as the likes of The Human Centipede, and disturbing for completely different reasons, but for me I'd have to say "American History X".

I don't really watch 'disturbing films', but Ronnie from 'Little Children' makes my skin crawl. I shudder every time I think about it.

There are 2 movies I can partially attribute my paralyizing fear of aliens to: Signs and Night Skies

Aside from that I'd never seen a movie I would call disturbing.

Grave Encounters (which is pretty tame by hardcore horror standards but it scared me).
I know my limits and what I can't cope with the human centipede being the top example (blood I can stand any thing else no, it's one of the reasons I'm not having kids).
I had trouble watching the 6th sense due to the puke scene I am that bad and I refuse to watch the exorcist due to puke scenes.

Saw - one of them. I don't remember which. It was pretty disgusting anyway with a lot of blood, gore, guts and general unpleasantness.

I have zero desire to see anything more disturbing than that, and I wouldn't really call it disturbing anyway. Just disgusting.

I've never gotten the appeal of gore/horror films. Just doesn't interest me at all.

Human Centipede (1 and 2) is cool. Pretty gore, and the blood is ok. But for me, it isnt that disturbing. For me, gore =/= disturbing. Disturbing movies, for me, are movies with graphic rape scenes and "realistic" cannibal movies. So here is my (growing) list of disturbing movies:

    I Spit On Your Grave
-I hate watching the rape scenes in the first part of the movie, but I DEFINITELY love the part where the victim tortured then killed the people who raped her.
    Cannibal Holocaust
-One of the cannibal movies with believable cannibal scenes. I liked it!
    Aftermath (1994)
-Necrophilia scene disturbed me the most. It is a short film and has no dialogue but it's really disturbing.
    A Serbian Film
-So far, the most DISTURBING movie. The climax of this movie really disturbed me, my jaw dropped after seeing that scene. I now know why this film has been banned for several countries.

Signs was super-creepy O.O but I don't think aliens are anything to be afraid of. Any that are out there are likely either benevolent, or would have destroyed us already lol.

I think the movie that rattled me the worst was The Strangers. There have been disturbing parts in other movies, but this one sticks out at me because it is so plausible. Concessions were made for the story of course, but still.

Well, thats exactly what they want you to think.

I noticed Human Centipede is getting alot of attention here bought I thought those movies were just pathetic honestly. Maybe the first one had at least a few mildly interesting psychological elements but the second one is past the border of what I can even consider as a movie. It's nothing but relentless gore porn with no redeeming qualities whatsover which makes it more boring than anything to me. Disgusting, maybe, but unworthy of being called, disturbing

I've seen a lot of disturbing movies in my time, most always appear on someone's list of disturbing/disgusting/graphic/violent movie list--some of them are honestly some of my favorite movies ever. It's hard to think of ones that deeply touched me, since not many have chilled me.

Since I can't think of movies as a whole that I thought were disturbing, I'll just mention various scenes in no real order. Spoilers will be included below the jumps, so heed with caution because some of them aren't for the faint of heart.

    1) Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom (1975) - This is a notoriously dark film set during fascist Italy in the 1940s, and the book is even more depraved than director Pier Paolo Pasolini (who was murdered shortly before the movie was released).

The movie has many shocking scenes, but the one that sticks with me the most isn't the "Circle of Shit", the stories told by the prostitutes, or the ultimate torture of the captives in the "Circle of Blood".

IMO, the most horrifying scene is the final scene in which two of the guards slow dance together while the tortures are taking place outside their window. It's so small, but the subtext is huge.

    2) Megan is Missing (2011) - Okay, let me explain myself. The movie itself is terrible, and probably one of the worst of the decade that got a theatrical release. I'm sure everyone knows what the movie is about; a girl goes missing and days later her best friend does too. It's another found footage movie, stringing the story together in the form of Skype recordings, camcorder footage, and clips from the news. So why bother mentioning it if the movie sucks? The rumors about the last 20 minutes is what got my attention to watch in the first place, and I didn't expect it to do what it did.

Would I say that the last 20 minutes are the most terrifying thing ever caught on film? Probably not, but it's pretty damn chilling--at least to me. Before I saw it, I heard about something called "the barrel scene", which was on a couple lists for disturbing movie moments. While I knew it was coming, and what was going to happen, it still caught me off guard and was creepy as fuck.

IMO, the most horrifying bit wasn't the rape scene. It wasn't the photos of Megan that they played shortly before the 20 minute tape. It was the last five or so minutes, which I think were filmed in real time--in which Josh puts Amy in a barrel (which we find out contained Megan's rotting corpse) and buries her alive while pleading for her life. After she's buried, Josh exits the cave with the camera and the movie cuts to black. While the credits roll, we see old footage of Megan and Amy talking about what they wanted to do when they got older and then the movie ends. Josh's identity is never revealed. I know after seeing it, I had this heavy feeling in my chest for days and I felt severely claustrophobic.

    3) August Underground: Mordum (2003) - I have a lot of respect for Fred Vogel, having the honor of being Facebook friends with him. Mordum is the second part of the August Underground trilogy, a series about a group of serial killers who document their violent crimes for fun.

While I don't have many strong memories of this one, there are three scenes that do stick with me. One is a boyfriend being forced to cut off his penis to save his girlfriend's life, which is pretty nasty. Another scene involves lots of puke. But perhaps the more intense scenes is the ending, in which one of the killers violates the corpse of a child in a bathtub. I didn't know what happened at first until sometime after the fact when I looked at the Wiki. Pretty dark stuff.

    4) Snuff: A Documentary About Killing on Camera (2008) - This was something I got excited about sometime after I saw the trailer. It's pretty self explanatory. FBI officials, criminologists, cinephilles, and some figures in the film industry come together to discuss the myth and legend of snuff films- a movie in which someone is actually killed on camera by the makers (usually for profit, but sometimes entertainment).

The movie is broken up into five parts; one talks about snuff and the pornography industry, one goes into snuff and it's relation to pop culture, one talks about snuff and war, and two go into real life accounts of snuff (or what was potentially the making of snuff films). While I feel that the movie has a lot of missteps (especially since a lot could be done if they waited about a year to finish production, or if they ever plan on doing a follow-up), there's one moment that does give me chills when I look back on it.

It happens in the "War" chapter, and it goes into how now that we're in the digital era, you don't need to go far to find death or "your own snuff films". Several people mention "shock videos" like beheading videos, victims of bombings and the consequences of war, Taliban sniper recordings, and footage of torture and humiliation done to prisoners overseas. The chapter ends with a story about a few soldiers who were captured and then beheaded by an extremist group. It begins to show the footage of one of them about to lose their life, but cuts to black before we can see it--but the audio is present and is so bone-chillingly horrific.

    --

And for the record; I've seen Faces of Death, Traces of Death, Cannibal Holocaust, Cutting Moments, A Serbian Film, Aftermath...and I'm sure others that will get mentioned. With FOD and TOD, I didn't really find them to be that bad. Repetitive (and mostly fake with FOD), but nothing too special. For me, if you've seen one, then you've seen them all.

If you are into those kind of mondos, I recommend "The Act of Seeing With One's Own Eyes" from the 70s. It's a Stan Brakhage film set in a Pittsburgh morgue, and it's pretty interesting. The creators of South Park (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) pay tribute to this in the South Park Movie, since Brakhage was one of their teachers in high school.

As for Cannibal Holocaust and A Serbian Film; I mostly saw them as being art films with some kind of social or political commentary than just mindless violence or completely disturbing. Salo also falls into this category for the same reasons, but I gave it an honorable mention.

With movies that have come out in recent years, like the Human Centipede, I see those as being black comedies, and not something that is really disturbing. Maybe that shows how warped my sense of humor is.

The Hills Have Eyes (remake) That whole trailer scene is hard to watch. I love horror films..but that scene got to me.

Begotten (for my indie film friends)
