Not sure, but I watched this video from a gay woman who said being in the closest really refers to having a difficult conversation with someone.. It doesn't have to refer to being gay as such, but any conversation you need to have that with the people you care about that you are scared to have. You might be really sick, or getting married or pregnant or lost your job or got suspended from school, etc.. That is all I see it as, nothing to do really specifically with the gay community.
