So I love the genres mentioned above but I can maybe listen to like a dozen bands because so many bands in these genres are transphobic, sexist, homophobic, etc. I'm wondering if we can compile a list of awesome bands that are LGBTQA friendly or in-fact members of those given communities. I'll start with a few I know. Extant(from Oregon) Limp Wrist Windmill Of Corpses Iskra
i wonder which bands are homo/transphobic. regardless, most bands are sexist but i guess that's cause they let their inner alpha male do the talking. in that sense it might just be the marketing team. Hellshot is one from NY, traditional heavy metal though
Cretin, Hekseri, and Winds of Plague all have trans members, and everyone knows Gaahl from Gorgoroth is gay. Greg Puciato from the Dillinger Escape Plan is a strong supporter for LGBT rights, as is Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü.
Since you mentioned Thrash, there is of course the obvious thing about Kirk Hammet of Metallica being Bisexual (or at least so my friend tells me), though I wish he would stop making out with Lars Ulrich because Lars is one ugly man and I rather see him kiss the other members of the band =P Oh yeah, just noticed Punk, there is of course Against Me! which not only has a trans* vocalist but made a entire concept album about her struggles as a trans person called Transgender Dysphoria Blues, I recommend it (though be prepared for some tears, it's not a happy album)
Morbid angel has some really fucked up mysogynist lyrics. Extant is really cool, its like sludgegrind and theyre pretty new they released a demo this year called "fuck macho bullshit." Seeing them live and listening their demo is a bit different but i think they sound like dystopia meets magrudergrind. When they play its just over-the-top intense. You can feel the queer rage filling the room.
After Dave Mustane from Megadeth publicly stated he was against equal rights for gay and lesbian people, the vocalist from the Dillinger Escape Plan went on a long tangent about the issue of homophobia in the metal scene. I'm pretty sure the Dillinger Escape Plan is an LGBTQ friendly band, based on that and other things I've read.
Morbid Angel is obviously a matter of opinion, i guess him talking about whores lusting for his flesh may not be a directly mysogynist lyrics but its at least a lack of sex worker solidarity which is a sympton of a patriarchal culture.
I saw a Youtube video of Alexi Laiho making out with a dude, so I'm pretty sure that rules of CoB. I also know Phil Bozeman has publicly stated he supports LGBT rights. (not sure if that counts, but just throwing it out there anyway.)
They've never said that any of the members are gay, and they're old school thrash, but I've also never heard anything in their lyrics that I would consider anti-gay. The band that I'm talking about is Anthrax. Some of the older members here might know of them.
well, Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert (Cynic /Death) came out of the closet last week :eusa_clap Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert of the Band Cynic Come Out As Gay| Gay News | Towleroad
I like Otep, and Rage Against The Machine. There are some others (Marylin Manson? Kind of, sort of?) Though only Otep is gay (Otep Shamaya is openly lesbian, though kind of has a thing AGAINST men) they all are pretty leftist and pro-equality.
