  2. an LGBT issue.

  3. I think it's equal.

Do you think HOCD is more of an LGBT issue or more of a mental health issue?

Well since 'H-OCD' is generally considered to not be an actual thing, and is usually recognized as being just OCD with a focus on sexual orientation as opposed to any other the other things OCD sufferers focus on, I'd say mental health.

    Being obsessed with your sexuality?
That's a definite problem and it's one that should be treated by a therapist.
OCD is treated by therapy, right?

Primarily Obsessional Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with a sexuality theme does exist, and you can read more about that here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOCD . People who have it, just like any other POCD, usually have intrusive thoughts they want to get rid of. Unlike being gay, those intrusive thoughts are a bad thing, and can be treated medically with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

The term "HOCD" itself is usually instead brought up by religious groups attempting to "cure" gay people, or by POCD sufferers with a sexuality theme who heard the term with an H instead of a P. Being gay is not something you can treat or cure with psychiatry, and unlike intrusive thoughts, it is not a bad thing anyway. Simply put, and I really want to emphasize this, people don't just talk themselves into being gay. For this reason, bringing up HOCD is usually - and should be - met with skepticism.

In fact, accepting being gay as being no big deal, can help just about anyone who is questioning their sexuality, not just people who feel an unwanted compulsion to do so.

What cassie29 said. I've dealt with what you might call severe OCD for most of my life, I imagine it would work the same way for people with so-called "HOCD," the thoughts would be focused on untrue thoughts about your orientation/sexuality. It's a very stressful thing, and I imagine it is no less for them.

DSM-V (the "bible" of the psychological and psychiatric fields) does not recognize HOCD as a standalone disorder. There is OCD, which affects a very small percentage of the population. and of the small percentage of people that have OCD, an even smaller percentage have OCD which has, as one of its obsessive thought patterns, a concern about sexual orientation. So we're talking about a tiny percentage of a tiny percentage.

Thanks to the religious right, this diagnosis has gotten way more visibility than it deserves. If you have other OCD tendencies, then the possibility that you could obsess over sexual orientation is there. If you have no other OCD tendencies, then it is near certain that you do not, by definition, have HOCD, since it's a subset of OCD.

This has happened to me. It really sucks. I often get extremely paranoid about being bi even though I don't hate bi people. I've had OCD tendencies my whole life, it was even mentioned in my grade two report card.

I just googled and read a touch on this so feel free to correct me and I do not. Gaurentee my answer because it can be wrong. It sounds more like a name to a orientation phobia like hetero or homopho bia rather than a compulsive . That is my 2cent.

I think it's more of a mental health issue than an LGBT one, though it certainly would effect the LGBT community. Mostly, I just feel badly for anyone with the diagnosis. *shrugs*

OFF-TOPIC: For future reference, please define any acronyms you might use when you start a topic. Googling isn't a particularly agonising task but really, you could've just expanded on the meaning.

As for the actual topic, I suppose it's a mental health issue just like any obsessive compulsive behaviour.

The best way I've heard to stop is and I've heard from people who had HOCD is to not worry about it easier said than done like if you have weird fantasies don't think anything of it don't try to examine it just let it be if you pay too much attention to it you give it power and it drives you nuts .

So first OCD sucks. I've had friends with it. It is one of those things you live your life around. I have nothing but sympathy toward people who have it. Especially the obsessional variety that comes with baggage like intrusive thoughts.

That said HOCD basically is just OCD. The thing you are obsessed about is "what is my orientation". People added the letter "H" mostly for political reasons. It suggests to people that homosexuality is one of the more common things people get OCD about, without any, you know, actual scientific data. Acronyms are funny like that, they can make anything sound more legit.

It's like saying someone who feels like they need to count grains of rice has CGOROCD, if that makes sense. So in a way, the people saying "it's real" and "it's fake" are both a little wrong, but the people saying "it's framed in a really bad way" are a little closer to the truth.

It's really frustrating, because people without OCD can have trouble coming to terms with their sexuality just because we're raised to feel bad about being gay. So there's this idea on the internet, and some people self-diagnose and decide they have it and that must be why they feel bad and are thinking about people "in that way". Or worse, they have friends and loved ones that read about it instead. It can make the process of coming to terms with who you are for a legitimately gay person really difficult, and worst case it can fuel wacky ideas some people have like books, movies, etc. "turning" people gay somehow.

I have a bad case of OCD about some other stuff that comes with intrusive thoughts.
Atleast the intrusive thoughts have stoped for a while.
Each day I tell myself I will finaly see a therapist/pyschiatrist but I never end up doing so.

    HOCD is wierd.

Just look a gay/lesbian porn and see if you like it. It's easy to get an answer to your obsession.

Based on reading some of the above posts, HOCD is on par with "nervous breakdown" in terms of being found in diagnostic manuals. Both terms are used, yet neither term is clinically correct.

Looking at porn is the worst thing an HOCD sufferer can do. For me it was the main reason that it started and it's like that for a lot of people as well.

I watched lesbian porn and I didn't enjoy it and I watched gay male porn and enjoyed it. This confused me a lot because I wasn't really attracted to guys in the real world.

A lot of HOCD sufferers get "groinal responses" which they mistake for arousal. I suffered from really bad groinal responses. I once thought that I was sexually attracted to my cat because I got a groinal response when I happened to be looking at her.

Since OCD reduces your sexual desire a lot of HOCD sufferers forget what real sexual arousal is like. I'm starting to get real sexual arousal again, but I still get anxious when I look at a guy and get a groinal response or notice his attractiveness.

I don't think I've ever gotten sexually aroused by a guy unless you count gay porn. In real life I'm quite prudish around guys. It's a huge struggle to even make myself kiss a guy despite my intrusive thoughts. I managed to kiss a guy once and it was gross.
