Everywhere I look, be it on the charts or songs friends listen to all they seem to be about is Love. Or loosely related to love/sex whatnot! I know love is one emotion that people get obsessed with the most, but still! I feel like it's a trend that ought to be changed, music should target other things which are also important!

I've been searching for some songs to mend a broken heart at the moment, and searches for such songs only gave me "angry love songs". Love songs are the last thing I need right now! (which is saying a lot as my taste in music was primarily love ballady type music ahah)

So are there any artists that make songs about other emotions, or just other stuff? Like why is there not a song where the lyrics are about a job interview the persons is nervous for?!

Can you guys give me songs not about love? Are there many artists that make songs about other stuff? (I can't listen to a select few tracks on Strangeland forever!)

Because it's a strong emotion which is very common, and thus easy fodder for songs. IMO, the mark of a great songwriter is when they can make beautiful music that isn't about romance.

    Jimmy Buffett

    Jesse Winchester

    Allman Brothers

    Los Lonely Boys

    Lynyrd Skynyrd

...and those are just to name a few. Granted all of those names probably have a few love songs, but have many noteworthy ones which aren't. Some of the greatest songs ever written have a message that isn't the generic "love exists and I am experiencing it."

Listen to music in a language you don't know, or electronic/ambient/classical music which often has no vocals, or indie rock + plenty of other genres. It's all out there.

    Ah...

Rap is about murder, drug dealing and money if that's your thing...

It's messed up to paint rap as only about those things. There are artists who rap about other stuff.

Some raps have really deep lyrics, it's just the genre they are sung in that turns me off.

It is exactly that, love is one of our strongest emotions, along with hate, therefore it is easier to compose love songs. If you can't get lost in a song you've written, it's because it didn't come from the heart and has no emotion in it, and if your not feeling the song then neither will your listener. An example of this Amelia by Tonight Alive, a song about how Jenna's, the lead singer, bestfriend past away when she was 16. A song about love for a lost friend. The first time it was performed Jenna cried on stage and I, myself, cant listen to it without crying. Love is an emtion everyone can relate to, so you could say it has a rather big audience.

Bit obvious i'm a musician myself, and a composer

Of course Amelia is pop punk, maybe not everyones genre, but it is definately worth a listen no matter what genre your into, it's just such a beautiful song.

Prog tends to steer away from the usual love topics (for the most part) so you might want to check out some Prog bands like Rush, who got songs about such topics as the political situation of trees in a forest, the French revolution and a dystopian future where music is forbidden among other strange or unusual topics.

Some of the heavier Metal genres are also pretty much the opposite of love songs for the most part, focusing mostly on hate and anger.

Punk (before the whole Pop-Punk and *Core boom) also rarely focused on love and instead focused on rebellion against the establishment in various forms.

^ seconded on Florence and The Machine. Got recommended to them by a friend and loved them! Depending on your tastes, you can also try Modest Mouse, who are pretty chill and have interesting lyrics.

Sure you have people who craft tales or have a message such as Macklemore, Common, Slick Rick, etc... But the question was "what else is there outside of love songs"?

Also I predominantly listen to rap, so I'm not using it in a disparaging way.

I'm mainly sick of all the romantic love songs too myself. I think other kinds of love (family/friends) can be sweet though.
