... And he apparently has no sense of timing whatsoever.

Daily Kos: Republican says poor children should be required to work for food

Is he competing for Ebenezer Scrooge Award, for Most Tin-eared Political Statement Award, or is this something actually appealing to his constituents? :bang:

Nothing says a good lesson like a healthy dose of embarrassment! I just don't know where they come up with this stuff. Like, I wouldn't get so mad if it was like "keep good grades" or something valuable...but this is stupid. God....I wonder.

Reminds me of Sir Talbot Buxomley from Blackadder the Third.

You know, I have a strange urge to hang this guy with his small intestines...

I would. In some cases, that could lead to starvation.

I may be mistaken but the USDA, which funds most free school lunches in the United States also funds the pet project of farm subsidies and crop insurance that Republicans love. Maybe that program also needs to be reviewed: There's no free lunch in farming either and Mother Nature sometimes has bad days, but don't worry there's no such thing as climate change so y'all will be all right .

...I actually did have to work in the kitchen when I lived in Washington to qualify for the free lunch program. As did all students. We had to serve the food, clean the dishes, etc.

No such thing as a free lunch - said by a rich white cis-het man whose position is basically inherited.

While I do think that people should earn their food, this is just cruel.
How do you expect children to develop job skills if they're too hungry to work?

I think the very act of being alive earns someone food.

My siblings and I had free breakfast and lunch while we were in school. If it was not for this, it would have costed my around $2500 a year for 14 years, we went to head-start and Kindergarten, before first grade.

Mind you, I did volunteer to work in the cafeteria cleaning tables for a year. During that year, I got free extras for working in the cafeteria. If one volunteers to work then yea, give them a free extra or meal. Or if they are apart of work program such as OWA (Ohio Work Association) and OWE (Ohio Work Education), then that is one something different all together. My brothers did this and they went to school part time and worked the other time. It is sorta a mixture between school, trade school and work.

For once, we agree on something.
    Cool.
I'm not a fan of giving people handouts, though.
There's a Chinese proverb that basically says: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

I prefer the Terry Pratchet version of that saying. Which is another thing I'd quite like to do to that asshole.

The idea of having children work on campus to be able to enjoy lunch with the rest of their peers is demoralizing. I never qualified for free lunch, nor did I ever eat school lunch to begin with; though I was actually enlisted for half of my high school career, because the woman that ushered me into my school district apparently assumed I must be eligible, being a racial minority...

Most public schools in the U.S. get paid simply for attendance so the idea that they can't spend an average of one dollar and fifty cents to help those that can't sacrifice it is obscene.
