Obama to skip Olympic games, selects gay athletes for Sochi delegation – LGBTQ Nation

    More in the link.

Even if the House says it's his schedule that won't permit him to attend the games, regardless I think it's more than that. There will be those who say he's doing this for more votes and other crap criticisms, but I just look at this as him showing the type of man he is.

I am really glad this is happening. Honestly, the message is pretty damn clear. No First Lady, no Vice President, and no former President to represent the United States at the games. ...and by purposefully including LGBT people as part of the delegation.

Yeah, the message is pretty damn clear. The President has already publicly condemned what is going on in Russia as well. Hopefully other pro-LGBT nations follow the example of the United States - refuse to send current or former heads of state, and send LGBT people (athletes in particular) to be part of their delegations.

This provides a great opportunity to highlight what is going on in Russia to the general public.

oh, wow. And our president is openly anti-gay, and we still allow him to do the job. Crap.

    Thanks for posting that.

    I'm glad to see this!

French President Francois Hollande will also not be attending the Sochi Games, nor will the representatives of a few other EU countries (Germany, and I can't recall the other).

I hope this list keeps growing.

Basically about the best thing you can do in relations other than not sending anyone at all.

Russia is stuck in the cold war, kind of like the fringes of the american right wing. it is just that the majority of america know that it was over decades ago, and don't psychoitly sexually fantasies about restarting nuclear tensions for the sake of it.

I'm a tad worried that the delegates could be punished if they speak about being gay.

Russia doesn't like diplomatic incidents directly implicating themselves; I don't think they'll risk a big issue with America without a proxy.

Err, what votes? He can't be re-elected in 2016 anyway. Presidents can only serve 2 full terms. (Or a total of 10 years, if they take over if they're vice and the president dies/etc.)

On the one hand this is awesome.

On the other... I strongly suspect that this kind of diplomatic snub would only bolster Putin's domestic popularity.

But on the other hand turning up would be presented as the laws not being an issue or even being condoned.
