Hawaii is undergoing the legislative process to finally establish marriage equality in the state, which began this whole movement in 1993. It is practically a one-party state, but there is a significant portion of the Democrats, often conservative Asian-American democrats, who are opposed to the idea. One Democrat who voted against the bill was Jo Jordan, who was elected to fill the current governor's seat when he was elected. What is significant about Jordan? She is openly homosexual, but still voted against this bill! Meet The First Openly Gay Lawmaker To Ever Vote Against Marriage Equality: Hawaii's Jo Jordan | ThinkProgress My reaction upon reading this was literally LOL WTF?!
Not a traitor at all, she was just thinking about what most of the Island thought about it. Which is good and bad in several ways sometimes. Mostly bad.
This entire special session is stupid. 29 amendments proposed and a super majority turned down. Someone proposed 3, all of which nobody voted for besides himself. This is the same guy who compared gay marriage to forcing jewish hospitals to serve BLTs in the cafeteria
Why does she derseve respect? Even if she doesn't want to get married, to not allow any of her own people to get married is bollocks. Most of her state supported gay marriage and I saw no reason why she would want to say no.
She's not even doing what her state wants as it says 55% of Hawaii was okay with gay marriage. Seems like a publicity stunt to me
Its just to gain support from people. That's what politicians are like these days. Even if they are against what the public want, they will side with the public so they can gain support etc...
"No, nobody’s going to beat me up. Nobody’s going to throw me out of my (LGBT) community — I’m not quite sure of that… I might vote against something that I personally believe in. I personally believe I should have the right. You know how hard it is for me to say no? I have to say no." Everyone's so ready to behead those who do not follow; just as some support it, others have reasons to oppose it. To take away her free will on an issue that CLEARLY she is well versed in is wrong. Her reasons may be hidden or seem strange, but she did what she felt was best at 'that' time. Perhaps once more support rallies over this in her own country/home, then she will make another educated decision and perhaps follow through. The LGBT community is SO quick to judge (especially among our own members), often we preach acceptance, freedom, and harp on those who aren't complying. To force others on a path is just as wrong as those condemning others on another. Pot calling the kettle black.
From what I've read, she didn't think the bill was written well enough. Jo Jordan Speaks Out on Why She Voted Against Same Sex Marriage Bill.
She needs therapy, not respect and 1/50 of the decision-making power on marriage equality. That goes for everyone who voted no, but i saw part of her speech, and she is one conflicted, neurotic mess.
People who were for slavery also had a point. They wanted free labor (a more logical reason than the anti-SSM crowd, mind you). Who are we to judge them, right? And yes, when someone is threatening your civil rights, it's damn well time to judge. Poor homophobes, being forced to not be able to force gays to do what they want them to do. I pity them so.
