if im reading it right... the vowel in 'guide' /aɪ/ is "raised and rounded in broad accents", though the phonetic transcription given is /ɑe/ which is backed and rounded... so, if it rises, id be more like /æɪ/... which could sound like gay /geɪ/, which it says that the vowel there can be lowered to /æɪ/... so, that could explain the mishearing /nerd
IPA FTW! Edit: Can someone explain to me please why sometimes when I post things in caps (such as initialisms, which are meant to be in caps and do not constitute shouting) it gets changed to first-letter capital only? It's a bit annoying.
yes IPA FTW! i dislike fauxnetics... like... oh emm gee :eusa_doh: i think its to stop people from abusing capslock spam...
That's because it's not the original article. The original article was published in yesterday's edition of the Sunday Mail (the newspaper mentioned in the article in the OP's link) and can can be found here. I think it's a bit rude to say something like that. This sort of thing can happen anywhere, not just in South Australia.
i still think that part needs a "[sic]" addition... on a similar note... just learned how different kiwi's talk than aussies... wow...
To any fellow linguist nerds still wondering about the pronunciation of "guide dog" vs. "gay dog" in Australian English, Language Log has a very thorough discussion of the matter.
haha, what a nerd out thanks for the link im guessing thats the case, cause as one commerter put, id be like 'goy dog' post shift xD
I like to think the world just smoked a bunch of crack. This doesn't conflict that thought. At all. Good thing they're blind? :|
what is this world coming to when a guide dog is not allowed in a restance will helping a blind person. surously WTF
