The reason the tourists are so anxious to see gays holding hands is probably because most life in conservative areas where this isn't common. Just a guess...

Lol maybe EC should rent a tour bus and go to a straight neighborhood just to take pictures. It really isn't a good thing when a gay neighborhood becomes an attraction though.

Wow, just wow.. As the article states, it's just like we're an exhibit at the local zoo. Sometimes my faith in humanity takes a beating!

I remember hearing about the first gay public gay center in the United States. I think it was in the Los Angeles area. Tour buses would drive by and people would take pictures, because they'd never seen the word "GAY" on a sign before.

I can see being over that whole thing, but if people are coming to take pictures, not throw things, I'd try to be positive about the whole thing.

Actually it would be a good opportunity to pull these people aside and tell them how important it is to vote for your rights. Use the opportunity to educate.

Honestly, with my warped sense of humor, if I lived there, I'd just start carrying a camera myself. "Oh, look, honey - Iowans! They ARE real!" (snap)

    LOL!!! That would be great.
I've always wanted to live in the Castro and I hope they get this cleared up soon because that's really rude and would piss me off to no end if I had to put up with that

hahaha, that is exactly what they should do!

Honestly, it could be worse although reading that is a bit... upsetting. My faith in the decency of humanity is dwindling just a tad (like always)

    Wow. That's interesting.

When I was England, with a group of other kids from Ohio, there was a lesbian couple. They were holding hands and this guy in my group tried to steal my camera to take a picture of them.

I was like "dude, they're not something to gawk at. They're human beings. I'm not letting you take pictures, because that's invading their privacy".

I don't know; part of me thinks, "would they take pictures of a straight couple? No! We should not be treated like animals at the zoo!" But the fact is that we are not yet in a society that treats us as equals, and this sort of thing could be used to educate straight people who may not understand gay people.

We live in a voyeuristic society, unfortunately. Reality shows and camera phone fever are to blame. You never know when you're going to be recorded.
I understand that San Fran, and that area in particular is very infamous for gay culture...so it makes sense it would be a tourist attraction. And as people have said, photographs are at least a step up from complete avoidance or worse...

Perhaps the over-the-top presentation of homosexuality is what is drawing the crowds. It's hard for everyone else to see gay people as normal, when charicatures, flashy or scantily-clad parade goers are among the most widely distributed presentations of being gay in America.
If we change the presentation, perhaps they'll change their perceptions and leave the circus peanuts at home.

I agree with this person's comment on the article:

You mean, "stop acting so gay"? Leave the hand-holding to the heteros? Sorry - that's last century.
