I like looking at history “what happened today” and stumbled upon a feed that shows LGBTQ folks each day. Today I was very impressed by the write-up for Billie Jean King, plus the one about Mae West.

Wow, both these women were pioneers in acceptance of LGBTQ.

I hadn’t realized Mae West had modeled herself after a female impersonator, or that she had criticized a police officer for his treatment of a gay/bi/trans guy, and that she surrounded herself with gay men. She was so sex-positive she served jail time. Pretty cool for someone born in the 1890’s.

As for tennis star Billie Jean King, “In 1971, King began an intimate relationship with her secretary Marilyn Barnett. King acknowledged the relationship when it became public in a lawsuit ten years later, becoming the first prominent American athlete to confirm having a gay relationship.”

    Mae West was a card.

Marilyn Barnett caused Billie Jean King a lot of headaches when it was all over. Billie Jean overcame it, though. She initially lost a lot of endorsements and sources of income.

The movie "Battle of the Sexes" was a good one. The movie shows the two women meeting while Billie Jean was getting her hair cut prior to tournaments. There is a lot to discuss about this movie.
